Same Score, Different Brain: Comparing Models by How They Process What They Know

Capability evaluation treats the model as a black box: prompt it, score what comes out. That approach understates what models know and tells you nothing about how they know it. Tim measures capability layer by layer instead, probing internal activations to map where information emerges, concentrates, and deteriorates as computation moves through the model.
Two models with similar benchmark scores can process identical information in structurally different ways. The talk covers a repeatable methodology for layerwise analysis, comparisons across model families, architectures, and parameter counts, and how post-training and quantization shift where capability signal lives. No prior mechanistic interpretability background required.
